There are so many places I want to see in the world, but since traveling alone is pretty socially unacceptable and kind of unsafe, I’ll likely never see these places because I have a short list of people I travel with and by short I mean two.
I have control issues when it comes to travel. I’d say the most common fear of flying has to do with the plane plunging into the ocean or skimming a wheat field in the Midwest and bursting into flames. My fear: time. I’m at the mercy of the airline. While I might get there on time, they may not be ready to take me and there’s nothing I can do about it. I took all the steps to make sure I made it to the airport on time and somehow it’s now my problem that the flight is delayed ruining every detail of my post-flight plans.
Also, the airport is like the DMV, anyone can fly. As long as you have an ID and a ticket, any social pariah is free to board and annoy the shit out of everyone on the plane by taking up 1.5 seats, exposing everyone to the most offensive of body odors in a contained area for no less than 60 minutes or striking up conversation about their bunion surgery to someone who has a legitimate fear of feet. Try as I might, I can’t control who gets on the plane, better yet, who sits next to me.
